Full Moon Walleyes III
by Rick Paquin
September 23, 1999

We've been talking about big walleyes on Mille Lacs Lake. However, the full moon phase will work on most bodies of water that are not highly stained. The key is how many walleyes are in the lake, how big are they, and what else is influencing them. You'll have to figure that out.

I'm still dealing with fishing Mlle Lacs during the full moon period. We promised you a couple more tips, so here goes.

You're out on the reef or rock pile or spine. There are a ton of boats and they've found you catching a few eyes and spooked them off of your honey spot. You caught a few fast and furious. You hit doubles in every pass over that special curve in the spine, but now nothing. What to do now?

Motor away from the other boats and pull out those number 18 Rapalas I told you about before. They will dig down to 10 to 12 feet. Few of your competitors will have these big lures with them. Move into 10 feet of water off to the side of the spine on the slower dropping side and troll in the same direction as the boatsd following the spine, only you'll be 30 to 40 yards out from them. Be prepared for some big fish, they like laying in that deeper water.

When you start catching them, be prepared for the others to move in on you. You can smile at them and keep right on trolling. Those eyes won't spook out of the slightly deeper water as easily. The other boats will be fishing with lures that go down about 6 feet and miss out on the good action. They'll be scratching their head wondering how your doing it. Just don't give them a close up view of the equipment your using. From a distance, it'll look like you're using the same as them.

Now for the last scenario. You've been out fishing all night, it's 2am and you've caught nothing. Everybody is leaving and you're out there all alone or with a couple of other boats. You're partner is ready to fall asleep, so reels in his rod and lies down to catch a nap. You're a diehard.

It's 3 am now and you have a fish on, you wake up your partner because you've cuaght this one in 3 feet of water right next to the buoy. You need your net man. When this happens you are in fish heaven. The bite is just starting and they are going to hit hard for a while. My last tip is, stick it out when all seems lost. The truly big hawgs feed exclusively when no one is usually fishing for them, between 3am and 5am.

Another thing I noticed is one person, at times, will seem to catch all or most of the fish, make sure you check your lure to make sure it's running true. A slight variation can make a huge differance.

Again, be careful out there. Stay in if the weather indicates any sign of rough weather. That way you'll be around to get another chance at those Trophy full moon walleyes.
