Happy 4th of July! Lower St. Croix River walleyes are biting in 18 to 25 feet depth of water. Trolling spinner rigs with livebait, live bait rigging, trolling cranks, and drifting with the wind have been effective walleye catching techniques. Saugers have been active as well, and caught on the same techniques. The river level is on a slow drop and still heavily stained though debris and sediment aren't very heavy. As a result of higher water temperatures the catfish have really been showing up.
These fine eating fish are readily caught on nightcrawlers and leeches (walleye bait) or cut bait (suckers mainly). Smallmouth bass are hitting very good and hitting plastics and crankbaits, these fish are in 4 to 8 feet of water. Muskies are also just starting to chew and look for these beasts to continue more aggressive. White bass are not on the scene yet; these silver streakers should be readily found any week now.
On a side note we got nine keepers today on a mixed bag half day walleye trip, and a boated a ton of smallmouth on the other half of the trip. While smallie fishing a huge muskie attacked a struggling smallmouth bass that my client, Peter Tiede, had hooked. He fought the fish for a good while until the muskie let go…As they say you never know what you are going to catch on the river!
Keep catchin and have fun!
Take care God bless!
