My wife and I have just returned from 3 wonnderful weeks on Lake Vermilion. We arrived 5/30 and left 6/19. The first week of our trip was as cold as I can remember in recent history. I'm sure the season opener was much colder but early June lows in the mid 30's and highs in the upper 40's is plenty chilly. The first two weeks of the trip was pretty much a minnow bite. We caught the occasional walleye on a leech but the leech fishing was mainly a dock thing. On June 13 the whole thing changed for us and leeches became our bait of choice.
We found our most consistent bite in 12-20' of water early in our trip. The fish were basically on mud flats adjacent to either a shallow rock pile or a bench that topped out at 12' out of a maximum depth of 21' of water. Although we tried our early spring fishing spots adjacent to deeper water, the bite was not consistent for us and we stuck with the "shallower flats" and the more subtle structure. Early the surface temps hung around 55 degrees early in the mornings warming to the upper 50's during the day. When the water warmed to the mid 60's, the leech bite really took off. During the first 2 weeks of our trip, the fish came in two sizes, too big and too small. A typical 15 fish catch would contain 11-12 walleyes 0f 10-12 inches and 3-4 of 17" and up. I don't think we caught a dozen walleyes during the first two weeks that would have measured 15-16+ inches. Generally, we fish 4-6 hours in the mornings quitting around 1:00 daily. We caught a total of 296 walleyes during our stay. During the last week of our stay, things changed dramatically. For example, one morning we caught 34 walleyes and 14 of them were 14.5-16++". Also included that morning was 8 additional fish that measured 17+-3,18-1,19-1,20-1,22-1,23-1. All fish during the last week were caught on leeches. We had another day where 20 fish were caught and all fish were 14"-18" with 8 that were 16+". During the past week, all of our fish came from rock reefs in 16-22' of water. The best fishing, as always, came on days that were overcast with a 5-10mph wind. When it was calm, we had to go very very slowly. We always back-trolled or drifted. Our tackle was the same as we always use: #4 Gamakatsu hook and single bead, Maxima leader, and 1oz bottom bouncer. I found that on certain days, different colored hooks seem to outproduce others. The best hook/bead color combo when we left was chartreuse hook and red bead. I found that smaller hooks produce fewer snags. The leaders were 3-4' and we found shorter leaders also produced fewer snags when fishing the bouncers pretty straight up and down. The biggest walleye caught was 26.5 inches and we caught several 22-23-24" fish. Hopefully, we will return in August. Good luck until then.
